Choosing a Dog Walker

Choosing someone to walk your dog is a difficult and potentially stressful decision. In the Brighton and Hove Area there has been an explosion of Dog Walkers in the last year, so I thought I’d list things that you should consider in your decision.

1.Your Dog Walker should be fully insured and Criminal Record Checked.

2.Do they work alone? If not how many different people can you expect to walk your dog and have access to your home? Point 1 would also be relevant for these people.

3.What system do they use with house keys – is it sensible and safe?

4.Is the transport fully caged?  Uncaged vehicles mean that all dogs travel together. Dogs can get anxious when travelling especially when it is all new, this could potentially lead to fights and distraction to the driver. Also when loading and unloading dogs uncaged dogs may be tempted to escape. This is very unsafe.

5.Does their company logo appear on their vehicle – not essential but a sign that they are proud of who they are and they do not shy away from being known.

6.Do they guarantee that they walk for a full hour or the time that you have agreed? If the variety of walks that they advertise has many different time lengths it’s doubtful that this will all be achieved.

7.Are they committed to their business? Do they have other jobs or responsibilities that could distract them?

8.Are they prepared to give references or telephone numbers of existing customers?

9.A simple love of dogs is not enough. You need someone with common sense who will avoid potential problems and act responsibly in a crisis.

10. Do they walk in safe areas?

11. Have they been Inspected and Approved by Brighton and Hove City Council and do they abide by The Proffessional Dog Walkers Code of Conduct?

12. Have they had any Doggy First Aid training so they know what to do in the unlikely event of an incident?

Your choice will of course be very personal but I hope the above points will give you the foundations to select the right person for you.
